MMMBop was the first single to be released off of Hanson's major label debut, Middle of Nowhere. The single shot to #1 in 27 countries around the world, and was played literally millions of times on radio stations during 1997 alone. MMMBop singles and promos are so extensive, there are literally dozens that have been released all over the world. Below are all the ones that I know about. There could easily be more ...

# 314 574 260-2
Release Date: April 15, 1997

Released in the spring of 1997, MMMBop singles flew off the shelves in music stores across the United States. Many do not realize that there are two different versions of the MMMBop single. The difference is a minimal, but important, discovery.

The first release featured here has the elusive 'maroon' MON CD cover pictured on the back of the single. It was thought that this 'maroon' cover would be the cover art for Middle of Nowhere, but for reasons unknown, Mercury decided to change the album cover's design to a different picture from the same photo shoot and tint it orange and yellow. This is, of course, the Middle of Nowhere cover that we are all familiar with (more info below).

Also notice that "Mercury" is spelled out on the spine of the CD - I've included it in the scan so you can see it. It is not the familiar Mercury diamond logo that we see on Middle of Nowhere albums & other singles.

# 314 574 260-2 IN02
Release Date: April 15, 1997 (?)

Here is the second US MMMBop single. Notice that it has the exact same catalog number except for one tiny difference: "IN02" was written below the barcode to distinguish it from the previous release. The 'maroon' CD cover is gone and the orange/yellow cover has taken its place. I do not know how long the first edition was out in stores before Mercury made this change.

Why the switch from maroon to orange/yellow? It is possible that the album art was decided before the single art; when the single art was created in yellow/orange, perhaps they thought it a good idea to make the album look similiar to the single.

And the bigger question: where any MON CDs with the maroon cover actually pressed? It's a secret no one knows ...

# 314 574 260-2
Release Date: 1997

French release housed in a cardboard slipcase with "two titres" written in the upper left hand corner. The elusive 'maroon' MON CD cover shows up on the back of this single.

My CD has two interesting typos on it - one, an upsidedown exclamation point after the word 'mmm bop', and the year is spelled '1197', not '1997'.

Note: There is a second French single with "two titles" in the corner, and, you guessed it, the orange/yellow MON CD cover instead of the maroon.

# 314 574 498-2
Release Date: 1997

MMMBop was released in several different formats in the UK, and it gets confusing keeping them all straight. :-P We'll start with the two track version of MMMBop. The UK chose a different picture than the US orange/yellow cover and opted for this group shot against a black background. Notice that the word "Hanson" is very close to Taylor and Zac's heads for this release.

Tracks:
1. MMMBop (Single Version)
2. MMMBop (Album Version)

# 314 574 499-2
Release Date: 1997

This edition is easy to remember, because it comes with a unique picture disc with the "hand over the camera" image. Notice with this release that the words "Hanson" and "MMMBop" are both at the top of the cover, and the spine is black with red letters.

Tracks:
1. MMMBop (Single Version)
2. MMMBop (Album Version)
3. MMMBop (Dust Brothers Mix)
4. MMMBop (Hex Mix)

# 314 574 499-2
Release Date: 1997

This common release has the same tracks as the version above, but the picture disc has been replaced with the familiar black CD with red orange, and silver rings. Notice that for this release the words "Hanson" and "MMMBop" have been moved slightly inward compared to the two track UK release, and the spine is yellow with black writing.

Tracks:
1. MMMBop (Single Version)
2. MMMBop (Album Version)
3. MMMBop (Dust Brothers Mix)
4. MMMBop (Hex Mix)

# 3565

This unique French promo has two tracks (Radio Edit & Dust Bros. Version) and is housed in a cardboard slipcase. Note that the word "Hanson" on the front cover is not exactly the Bauhaus font like all other CDs depict - it's a slightly different look. There is a paragraph in French about the band on the back cover. The back cover and the bright yellow CD has an interesting "flower" design - the beginning design for Where's The Love, perhaps? ;-)

The only catalog number that I can find is a line of text that says "disque promotion interdit a la vente 3565" - your guess is as good as mine!

# SAMPLER

Extremely rare Korean MMMBop promo with rare cover art not seen on any other release. Includes four tracks, all from the Middle of Nowhere album.

1/09 Update -- after YEARS of wondering about this CD, I finally have more information about it, and high-quality scans of the cover art, booklet, and CD! This CD is definitely an official promo release from Korea. A gold sticker on the front says "Promotional Not For Sale - Polygram -", and the word "SAMPLER" is written on the spine. The promo comes with a mini-booklet with pictures, Korean text, and "reviews" of each of the tracks. It's SO rare and AWESOME!

At left, the pictures are the CD case w/gold sticker, the front cover, the back cover, pages inside of the booklet, and the CD. Thank you Hannah for the awesome pictures!

Tracks:
1. MMMBop
2. Where's The Love
3. Lucy
4. I Will Come To You

# SAMPLER

Very rare one-track Korean MMMBop promo. The front cover says that it is a "Sampler" even though it only has one track. Some editions had a sticker on the front, some didn't.

Look at what is on the back cover - there is Korean text, the elusive 'maroon' MON photo, plus information on MMMBop's debut at 16 on the Billboard charts. Very rare, no other promo CD has this information.
